About Better Ballot SC
Better Ballot SC is working to bring a better, more inclusive voting system to South Carolina.
We are a nonpartisan grassroots movement comprised of a diverse group of South Carolinians who are uniting under a common cause: to make elections more fair with instant runoff voting.
Redistricting in SC
At the behest of Washington, DC, House members have begun the process of redistricting our congressional seats. If this passes, it would decouple the Congressional primary from the rest of the primary. We would still vote in the June 9th primary for everything except our congressional representatives. We would vote for our congressional representatives in August.
Better Ballot SC opposes this on two main grounds. First, this is rushed and will disenfranchise voters. Secondly, this process will not result in a fair map. South Carolinians overwhelmingly want fair maps. A Winthrop poll from December 2025, found that a majority of South Carolinians don't want maps to favor or disfavor political parties or people based on their race.
So how do we get fair maps? Multi-winner, proportional ranked choice voting (aka single transferable vote). It would mean that voters political preferences are reflected in their representatives. At it's most basic, in a district with 3 representatives, if 60% of the population votes for Republicans and 40% for Democrats, there would be 2 Republicans and 1 Democrat in the district.
Republicans in Democratic areas having representation and Democrats in Republican areas having representation would be a reality. Click here to learn more about proportional ranked choice voting.
